Getting Anna off to school.
Later after we got back home, Emma asked me who was going to tell her "Don't let the bed bugs bite." when she went to bed. It has been a thing between the two girls that Anna would always say that when Emma went to bed. Emma has really gotten attached to Anna, and it was made an even stronger bond this past summer with her spending more time with Anna, and having sleep overs in Anna's room. Earlier this year, Anna and Emma went to Build-A-Bear and Emma got a bear from Anna that she named Sophia. They put a voice box inside that says "I love You." when sqeezed. Last night as I was getting Emma into bed I heard her squeeze Sophia a couple of times and say "I love you Sissy. Don't let the bed bugs bite."

She's got an argument...
Emma went along when I took Jacob to the dentist today. In the playroom there is a TV, and Sponge Bob was on. Emma knows that I do not like her to watch that show, and shared that information with the other children. On the way home she made a case for why I should allow her to watch the show again. On of her arguments was that there were some of her favorite things in the show, like a sponge and a starfish. Her most compelling argument tho was that "God made TV. And God made the things on TV. Remember God?"

By the Numbers
Today, we received Anna's final report card. Pretty amazing. Her cumulative GPA for all 4 years is 4.721. Her final ranking is 21 out of 663 students.
I haven't seen Jacob's grade card from Jr. High, and I don't think they keep the same kind of information, but I know he finished on the Honor Roll.
Even tho I have absolutely nothing to do with the academic success of the both of them, I still love to marvel at their accomplishments, and do a little bragging.

Christmas Follow Up
For me though, to see Emma understanding what was going on, and to see her excitement over Santa Claus was really special. She was very happy to see that Santa brought her the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and a stuffed giraffe that she had asked for. She got lots of other toys and goodies from Mommy and Daddy, and Grandma, Pop, Uncle Jason and Aunt Melissa. So much so that I had a hard time getting her to go to bed. So far one of the top favorites has to be the Cooties game. Such a simple and inexpensive toy, and it gets the most playtime.
Since the presents were given out last night, it is okay to share some pics. We had family pictures taken and hired one of Tammy's friends to be the photographer. The link is to her blog where she posted a few of the pictures. Also if you go to the main page, you can find pics from Anna's senior pictures photo shoot. If you haven't seen them, you should!

Anna's senior pictures-

We even snuck in a mother/daughter portrait. I tell you, I just don't know where the years go.

If you would like to see a slide show with Anna's whole session, you can see it here.
If you are in need of beautiful candid photos, you can't go wrong by using Holly. (I know, I sound like a Holly commercial!!)

Pumpkin Picking
Last weekend we took a trip out to Eckerts for pumpkin picking. It was so hot! It was strange to be sweating and pumpkin picking at the same time!

Jacob wasn't too happy about having to go. He made a grumbly face in every photo!

Emma didn't want to ride any of the rides until she got to pick out her little pumpkin. She had no interest in the bigger ones at all. She just wanted a baby one.

Anna picked out what she believes is the "perfect" pumpkin.

A wall of pumpkins in the outdoor market area.

Some of the many fall mums decorating the farm and market.

One year later. . .

One year. 365 days; 8,765 hours; 525,948 minutes; 31,556,926 seconds.
It is hard to believe that today marks one year since our family faced something that we never thought would happen to us, you know, one of those things that happen to "other people". One year ago, we were the other people. A year ago today, right about noon, our house caught fire.
Although it was hard to say last year when this happened, we were lucky, if a fire in our house was something that had to happen, for whatever reason, it happened in the best way it could- during the day when no one was upstairs. I still get sick to my stomach when I think of how things might have been if it had happened at night.
The fire started in Anna's room, very close to her bed. It quickly took over the window area, which was one of our planned escape routes for Anna and Jacob (both of their rooms were upstairs). Thankfully, when the fire started, Anna was not in her room. She had taken Emma and the dog for a walk. I was on night shift at the time and was asleep in my room downstairs. Jacob was in the basement playing video games. David was at work. I remember dreaming about smoke, thinking a neighbor must have been outside burning leaves. I remember thinking how dumb that was in the middle of August, didn't they realize how dry it was outside?! It is crazy what you think when you are half asleep? Jacob told me that he smelled something but he wasn't at a safe point in his game and that as soon as he got there he was going to check out the smell. Luckily, Anna got back before that.
She came in the back door and saw that the house was full of smoke. I heard her come in and tell her brother to get out. She then came to my room and told me that I needed to get up, that there was smoke in the house. I remember thinking it was a joke or an exaggeration. I got up and yeah, it was hazy. I thought it was because I was tired and didn't have my glasses on. I got them on and realized that yeah, the house was full of smoke. I went to grab the phone and realized that I had left it in the living room. By the time I found it and made my way to the back door, the smoke was very thick.
When I got out the back door I called 911 and told them the house was full of smoke. It was rolling out of the eaves of the house. I hung up with them and called David. I told him that the house was full of smoke and that I had called 911. One of our neighbors met me there and took the kids and the dog to her house. I then walked around the front of the house. I still can remember the sound and the smell and the horror of seeing the front of my house on fire. I think to that point I thought it was just smoke. Of course it stands to reason that if there was smoke there was going to be fire, but at that moment, I hadn't grasped that. I then became one of those people, who called 911 back. If I had been of clear mind I would have known that the fire department was on the way, that other neighbors had already called, but at that moment I needed to call back and tell them that there was indeed fire and that it was fully involved. As a 911 dispatcher myself, I should have known that I didn't need to call back, that help was on the way, but at that moment I wasn't that dispatcher anymore. I remember standing there feeling so helpless and so doomed. I am so glad that the kids never saw the front of the house and the actual fire.
My kind neighbor who took the kids came back and stood there with me. I don't know that I had hardly ever spoken with her before that day, but on that day she was so kind and stood there with me as I watched my house burn. I remember hearing the fire trucks coming and thinking they sounded like they were a million miles away and moving further away. Thankfully we live just blocks from a full time fire station. A lot of the towns around here have volunteer departments, but our town has a full time paid department. I have been so thankful for that so many times over. A friend who dispatches here in the town I live in told me that the first truck arrived within 2 minutes of the dispatch. It seemed like a million years.
David got home very quickly. He was on duty and came in his squad car. He won't say for sure, but I am pretty sure he responded lights and sirens all the way. I was so thankful to have him there with me.
Once they let us go in, it didn't seem so bad, at least downstairs. The downstairs looked the same, well except for the water coming through the ceiling. Going up the stairs though was like night and day. Although the fire was contained to Anna's room, the entire upstairs was pure devastation. The smoke and extreme heat had charred and melted everything. It was so sickening. I think the hardest thing I ever had to do was to go to Anna and tell her that it was her room and that she had lost everything. Jacob lost everything in his room also, but had the majority of his stuff in the basement. For Anna though, who is very sentimental over things, it was especially rough.
I could write for days about the whole experience, the tough days ahead, the headaches of construction, but instead I want to spend today thinking about the kindness of others and feelings of gratitude. I was to remember today about how sweet Anna's friend Aleyshia was to ride a mile on a bike with flat tires so she could be with her. I want to remember the kindness of a neighbor who took in my kids and kept them safe and distracted. I want to remember a co-worker who arrived with a cooler of cold Dr Pepper, sandwiches, and Little Debbie brownies, who worked in the heat to help move important things to a safe place. I want to remember the love and support of family who will drop everything to come and stand beside you. I want to remember the generosity of others and be grateful for really good insurance. I want to be thankful that there are men and women who are willing to face danger and battle the elements in order to preserve and save your property. I think it is important to remember that in trying times it is okay to lean on others and accept help, which is something that is very hard for me.
And although it may sound materialistic, I want to celebrate my house today and what she means to us. When David and I bought this house almost 5 years ago, we vowed that this was a forever house for us. We vowed that we would grow old in this house together and would raise our family here. . . that we would spend our days rocking on the front porch. To us, this wasn't just a house, this was a home, a symbol of who we are and what we dreamed of. Despite what occurred last August 15th, this house stood strong. She faced many trying days but through it all, she remained. We were told that if our house had been new construction, the damage would have been more severe. It is amazing to think that over 85 years ago, with out the convenience of many of today's modern equipment that this house was built strong enough to weather this storm and remain strong and victorious.
We have learned so much this year. I can't say I am glad for the circumstances, but I am grateful for the lessons learned. There are so many things in this life that can be gone in an instant, sometimes losing all of the 'clutter' really helps you remember what is important.

Sorry-
Things have been busy and crazy. We have had Del at the house working almost every day since we moved in. The plaster work was all horrible and had to be re-done. So even though all of the painting was done, it all got plastered over and has to be re-done. I have been waiting to post photos of the inside of the house until this was done. The estimate is that the patching will be done this next week.
After that we have a small amount of trim work and some siding and shingle work to be done and then it will all be done. Oh, I am forgetting about the yard work. Oh, and we are starting construction of Jacob's new room in the basement next week. But after that, then it will all be done!
So I guess I should mention that in our few weeks home, we have had 2 gas leaks (one of which was major, not sure how the house didn't explode), 2 sewer back ups, a fire in the dishwasher, a leaky water, a shower that didn't work, new furniture that wouldn't fit upstairs or downstairs, phone service nightmares, and a couple of misc other dramas. Knock on wood, things have kind of quieted down. I dare say, we are almost back into our normal rut!
I do promise that very soon we will post some photos of the inside of the house. We are pretty happy with how it has all turned out. Oh, and stay tuned, we are planning some kind of open house/house re-warming very soon. If we could just get them to finish the job!

There is still work to do but it is mostly trim work. We are very happy to be home but also exhausted from the work! We are looking forward to a day when we have nothing to do!

Greetings!
Our internet and phone (ugh and Direct TV) didn't get hooked up yet, so we will be checking in from the courtesy of the free internet at St Louis Bread Company and our work places. Everyone cross your fingers for fast hookups, otherwise we just might go crazy!!

The kitchen cabinets are more than halfway up. We are really happy with how it is looking!

This section on the side, when finished is supposed to look like a freestanding hutch. I saw a picture in a cabinet catalog and fell in love with the idea. Hopefully the cabinet guy got the plan right. Right now I am a little worried about the top not looking right. I think those top cabinets were supposed to be deeper. . . we will see.

After being painted the whole upstairs plaster job had to be re-done because of quality issues. It is finally done and painted again. The plaster looks great this time. I think Anna is really loving her new HUGE room.

Fill your world with color. . .

In the upstairs bathroom: Frolic.

In the upstairs sitting room: Wave Crest

In Anna's room: Celery Sprig (There is plaster work still going on there, which is what all of the white patches are.)

In the kitchen: Lemon Souffle
I want to point out here the woodwork around the new windows in the second photo. Del has built and stained new window trim to match exactly our existing window. It looks so good in person, you would never guess it was new.

In mine and David's bedroom: Reverie Pink (I just can't get a good photo of this color, it is a very soft shade of pink.)

Emma's room: Sweet Corn

Downstairs bath: Mystic River (It is a little more periwinkle in person.)

Living room: Rejuvenate (a great sagey green!)

The dining room and foyer: Celery Ice. . . but we don't love it. It came out so light that you can barely tell there is color. . . so we have picked out new colors. For the dining room, Chianti. Yep, imagine it, a very lush wine/red color. And for the foyer, Egyptian Nile. It is very similar to the living room color, but about 2 shades DARKER. Both are colors we really liked but were kind of afraid to choose because they were deeper colors. Instead we went with the second choice. You know they always say to trust your first instinct. Hopefully next week I will have photos of those colors up.
In other developements. . .
You can see that the wood floor work is being done. Today they actually put color down. David said it looks really good. I can't wait to go over and see it.
The kitchen cabinets are going up. So far they are looking really good.
The flooring is down in the bathrooms and kitchen.
The new trim is all in upstairs.
We are so close, the light at the end of the tunnel is almost within reach.
Outside. . .

I hope you can see in this picture the addition of the red trim color on the pillars. I absolutely love it! It gives the porch posts a real visual pop. (Okay, that is the most overused word on HGTV and I hate using it, but suddenly I can't think of an alternate word!! The porch floor still needs to be painted (a deep sage) the new storm door installed, and the gutters but for the most part this is how she will look when all is done. In the spring we will probably repaint the porch skirting white and maybe the brick pillars, but we aren't sure yet.

And last but not least, here are my three babies! The best thing about this home is the three amazing children who live under its roof. Soon, very soon, we will be home. What a journey this has been.
